Using renewable energy for as many uses as possible truly puts energy production and use in our hands and turns families, businesses, farmers, communities and local industries into owners and managers of their energy future. This applies as much to a family in rural Africa as it does to a small business in Canada.
Using current technology it is possible for any building in any country to have a net-zero energy demand, i.e., over the course of the year, the amount of power and heat consumed equals the amount of heat and power produced. Optimized "smart" power grids and energy storage would make our homes and businesses autonomous.
Reorganizing and increasing the efficiency of the way we travel to work, visit friends and move goods, and meeting these needs with renewable fuel sources, is more difficult to envision. However, cities like Curitiba in Brazil and Bremen in Germany have drastically reduced their transport energy use. If we all did the same, production of biofuels like ethanol and biodiesel from crops and wastes would provide local agricultural diversification.
